Echoes

At Alaska Studios, Lokeren. At Alaska Studios, Lokeren.

What happens to a melody when people leave their homeland? Does it disappear? Or does it travel with them – in suitcases, memories and voices – from village to village, from continent to continent? Echoes tells the story of the Italian melody as a universal language of longing, comfort and hope. Music that has guided generations through all of life’s major moments and accompanied millions of migrants as they left their homeland behind in search of a new life.

Brussels Jazz Orchestra and Michel Bisceglia present a performance in which jazz, cinema and Italian lyricism merge into a single, grand cinematic narrative. Rooted in both Italian culture and the Belgian jazz tradition, Bisceglia embodies the spirit of Echoes like no other. As a composer, pianist and film composer, he moves effortlessly between imagery, emotion and music. Drawing on this personal connection, he joins forces with BJO, Anaïs Vijgen (vocals) and Gwen Cresens (accordion) to create a new musical world in which Italian melodies do not sound like folklore but as something timeless and recognisable to everyone.

The power of a melody

At the heart of Echoes lies the power of melodies that combines purity with emotional depth — music that touches the listener immediately, yet remains multi-layered and intelligent. It is precisely this quality that made Italian composers world-famous and allowed their music to become part of the collective memory.

Echoes is not a nostalgic reflection, but a contemporary story about identity, migration and human connection. It’s about how music transcends borders, transforms cultures and brings generations together. Because some melodies never truly disappear. They continue to resonate in our collective memory — like echoes of the places that shaped us.
