1. The contest is only open to composers who, on the day of the final, have not yet attained the age of 41 years.
2. Every composer can send in 1 (one) composition for the Contest.
3. The composers of the selected works will be expected to attend the rehearsals on Wednesday July 8th 2009 and the final on the Ghent Jazz Festival on Thursday July 9th 2009. International transport and hotel in Belgium during the Contest is on organisers account.
4.a. The new and original composition (which must not have previously been published, filed with the copyright authorities and/or recorded) must be orchestrated for a ‘big band’ instrumentation (see 4.d.).
b. The composition must last for a minimum of 7 minutes and a maximum of 9 minutes. At least two-thirds of the total duration of the composition must consist of actually written-out music, including any backgrounds.
c. The composition may consists of several sections.

e. No extra musicians may be demanded for any solos and/or solo-type passages.
5. A maximum of four (4) selected works will compete against each other on the day of the final (07/09/2009). These works will be interpreted by the Brussels Jazz Orchestra (BJO). The final can be recorded.
6. The score must be submitted to the contest organisers computer printed both in concert key and in a transposed version, on A4-format (or similar), numbered, NOT attached by any means (staples etc. …). The score has also to be sent in on CD-rom. It has to be saved in a Sibelius or Finale format.
The score must be in the hands of the organisers no later than May 1st 2009 at midnight. The date of the postmark is the only valid evidence of submission. This score must be sent anonymously by registered mail to the Secretariat. International competitors send their score as DOCUMENTS. The organisers will not pay any custom tax.
7. The submitted work must be sent by registered mail in a sealed envelope. The large outer envelope will contain the orchestral score and a small sealed accompanying envelope containing the following documents (printed):
a) the surname, forenames, date of birth, address, mobile telephone number, fax number and email address of the composer.
b) a declaration signed and dated by the composer in which s/he states that the work was specially written for this contest and has never been performed, not even in part (see article 1).
c) copy of the passport of the composer.
Submissions that do not contain the documents mentioned above will be refused. The participant must ensure that the scores do not contain any indications from which his or her identity might be deduced. If this is the case then the score will be rejected.

Only the Secretary to the jury will be aware of the information contained in the sealed accompanying envelope (see section 4 below). There will be no phone communication held regarding the contest, only written communication to the Secretariat.
After the preselection the selected finalists will be invited to send the contest organisers the full instrumental parts in computer printout. These parts must be in the hand of the contest organisers no later than June 15th 2009 (in computer print).
8. The contest organisers will inform the selected finalists of the jury’s decision by June 1st 2009 (by email/fax/phone). The finalist has to confirm his/her presence for the day of the finale before June 10th 2009 (see Article 3).When a selected finalist can’t be present at the rehearsal and/or finale, the first reserve finalist will be called.
9. The finalists must be present at the general rehearsal on July 8th 2009 (location tbc). Each prize-winner can make use of a timed rehearsal period with the BJO of max. 45 minutes.
The prize-winner conducts the BJO during the contest.
10. The powers of the Composition Contest:
The compositions will be judged by a jury consisting of both national and international members. Members of the jury and members of the BJO cannot themselves enter the contest.

If a member of the jury becomes aware that one of his/her pupils has submitted a score then s/he must ask the pupil for the title of his/her work and notify to the Contest directorate. S/he is then prohibited from voting on this composition.

The Contest directorate is empowered to take all necessary measures to ensure that the contest runs smoothly.
11. The prize giving will take place on the day of the final immediately after the jury has concluded its deliberations.
The winner of the BJOICC receives a money prize of €2500, paid cash immediately after the finale and a audio/video recording of his composition.
The audience that joins the finale, chooses a winner for the Public Prize, a prize in kind.
12. The prize-winning composer whose work is recorded and published on CD declares that s/he is in agreement with surrendering the task of publishing his/her composition entirely to the publisher/producer of the CD which is issued for this purpose, in accordance with the following apportionment key of Sabam: 13. Not respecting the contestrules will mean immediate disqualification of the participant.
14. The verdict of the jury is final and is not subject to appeal.
